There are 5,000 to 6,000 cultures in the world. Some cultures are beginning to dwindle due to globalization spreading different systems and beliefs. Even though, most people do not know it, culture is a strong part of people’s lives. It influences our views, our values, our attitude, our life style, our sense of humor, our hopes, our social life, worries and rituals. So when kids are making friendships with people, it helps to have some perspective and understanding of other people’s cultures.
“Culture” refers to a group or community which shares common experiences that shape people’s worldviews. It includes groups that we are born into, such as race, national origin, gender, class, or religion. It can also include a group we join or become part of. For example, it is possible to acquire a new culture by moving to a new country or region, by a change in our economic status, or by becoming disabled and getting a new job title. When we think of culture this broadly we realize we all belong to many cultures at once.
